Joh 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
So what does Jesus mean by fruit? I believe that are some very specific things that the Bible tells us are the great desires of God for our lives. They are, The fruit of the Holy Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Also holiness, doing the will of the Father, the inflow and out flow of the love of God, communion with God through prayer and His holy word, and sharing the gospel of Christ with those around us. All these would constitute some of the fruit God is looking for in our lives.
So here is an interesting question: What is the reward for the Christian who abides in Christ and stays connected with Him so that fruit is produced bringing glory to God? Is it blessings, riches, or fame? No it is pruning. What? This doesn't seem fair you say. If a person has done their best to serve God, He strips away, cuts, and peels back the branches leaving them exposed and bare? Yes, He does.
Joh 15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
Why? Because God is not interested in large branches. There is only one thing that impresses Him and that is fruit. The stories about last year's harvest are last year's stories. This is a new years. So He strips you of the pride of last year's fruit because He wants to take away all that will get in the way of the fruit that will be produced this year.
Some Christians question God for difficulties they are going through. They wonder why God is not blessing them. They get discouraged and ask where is God in all this? But they forget that God's great goal is not our comfort or even happiness. He is conforming us into the image of Christ and sometimes that is messy and painful experience.
But remember the comfort the word give us:
Heb 12:5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son." 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.
9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
